I will never forget my cousin giving me the best piece of college advice I have received in all my four years.
“Do not dress up for the first day of school. I wore nice sandals and jeans with a top and I have never felt so overdressed and uncomfortable before.”
Unlike our nightlife, less is more when it comes to going-to-class fashion. There is an unspoken dress code for every single thing here, and classes are no exception.
So what do you wear?
It depends on the weather Nick Saban chose for us that day.
For tops, big comfy T-shirts are the best!
I may be biased about this, but there is nothing better than being comfortable at your 8 a.m. Lots of Greek life t-shirts will be present, along with ‘Comfort Colors’ t-shirts. There will be a variety of University of Alabama logo t-shirts around or ones designed from JNJ Apparel.
Besides T-shirts, Lululemon tops, such as Aligns are ragingly popular. We even have our own Bama Lululemon line, since we are the BEST school ever. Classes can get cold, so bring a hoodie or pullover to wear over is our recommendation.
For bottoms, leggings, tennis-skirts and running shorts are all appropriate attire. Unless your professor tells you to wear nice jeans or pants, don’t do it. It’s not comfy and you will most likely get some off-putting glances. Take advantage of the times you can dress casually here, there’s not a ton!
What about shoes?
Comfy sneakers ALWAYS. This campus is massive, and you will walk miles some days if you have a full course load and activities. Nike is the most popular brand, with lots of Air Maxes and Air Forces around. White shoes are always easy to match to your outfit.
The only exception to the sneaker rule is slippers. Some will wear those cute fluffy UGG ones, but you can find the same style with different brands.
If it’s cold, throw on a cute sweatsuit set! Almost every online brand now sells a cute variety to sort through. You can wear a puffer coat over it during our cold-fronts! If you are one of the many students from up North, you can continue to wear a t-shirt and tell everyone about how “it’s not even cold it’s like negative 100,000 degrees back home; YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT COLD IS”.
Now for bad weather.
Hunter rain boots, you either love them or hate them. But they are tall, and you need tall ones for the spring nados and strange floods. Any rain boots will help prevent you from slipping on the steps of Reese Phifer though. Invest in a pair with a cute matching umbrella.
Raincoats are a lifesaver. A hoodie will not protect you from the rain power these storms have, and you’ll have to sit in class soaking wet! Amazon carries a decent variety, and of course, Hunter does as well.
For beauty related items, minimal makeup and skincare is what I recommend. Most will not be wearing makeup, or very natural makeup. Hair can be done, up or down. I prefer to wear mine in a claw clip so it is out of my face while taking notes and crying over how I don’t understand a single thing my professor is explaining. Wearing it up, or put back, is an easy way to look put-together, while hiding the fact you were at T-shirt Tuesday till 2 a.m.
Color schemes are fully up to you! Some wear neutrals, verus others wear bright sonic pink from Lulu.
