Introduction
Yes, music festivals are a thrilling and holistic experience for any music fan. However, navigating the music festival scene for the first time can be extremely overwhelming, especially as a college student. There are hidden fees and costs you don’t think about around every corner. There are so many incredible music festivals that can be overshadowed by the big names of Coachella or Lollapalooza. As a student in the southeast, there are several opportunities to experience a music festival on a budget.
From the sandy shores of the Hangout Music Festival to the country vibes of CMA Fest, these events cater to diverse musical tastes and provide an incredible atmosphere for students to unwind and make lifelong memories.
Location: Gulf Shores, Alabama
Dates: Typically held in May
On the picture-perfect beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama, the Hangout Music Festival offers an unbeatable combination of sun, sand, and music. This festival is perfect for college students looking for a beach getaway with a stellar lineup of artists from various genres. Imagine dancing barefoot in the sand as your favorite artists serenade you with their music – that’s the Hangout experience.
As a college student, Hangout Festival stood out to me for its diversity. People of all backgrounds, genres and styles attended the festival and every attendee was able to customize the experience to their liking.
Speaking of diversity, one of Hangout’s strengths is its diverse lineup, featuring headliners from pop, rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. Previous lineups have included artists like Billie Eilish, Post Malone, SZA and Paramore.
Hangout has stages both on the beach and on the nearby streets. Some stages have foam parties every hour, while you can watch the sunset behind your favorite artists’ performances.
Beyond the music, Hangout offers numerous beach activities. For attendees under 21 or choosing not to drink, there are fun activities such as beach volleyball, roller skating, a Ferris wheel and so much more. There are also exclusive areas and experiences for attendees of drinking age. Alcoholic drinks are typically $12-$14, so it may be more cost effective to not drink once inside the festival ground.
Of course, some meals may be more expensive, but I was able to eat for an average of $10 per meal. The festival also provides free water refills, so be sure to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and save money.
Many companies have booths throughout the festival and hand out a wide variety of free merchandise. I was able to leave the festival with 8 sticks of free deodorant, a bucket hat, a clear fanny pack and more!
I believe that Hangout Music Festival is the perfect festival for a college student, especially in the southeast.
CMA Fest (Country Music Association Festival)

If you’re a fan of country music, there’s no better place to be in June than Nashville, Tennessee, for the CMA Fest. This four-day event is a country music lover’s dream come true, with performances by the biggest names in the genre and plenty of opportunities to explore the vibrant city of Nashville.
CMA Fest brings together the biggest stars in country music for epic performances, fan interactions, and surprise collaborations. You’ll be singing along to your favorite country songs with thousands of fellow fans. This past year, Miranda Lambert brought Avril Lavigne on stage- yes, Avril Lavigne at a country music event.
In addition to the ticketed shows, CMA Fest offers several free stages where you can see additional artists and enjoy the festival atmosphere without breaking the bank. Every level of country music performer performs at CMA Fest from independent artists to internationally loved artists such as Reba Macintire or Eric Church.
If you want to experience the Nashville/ Broadway scene at full blast, I highly recommend CMA Fest. On top of free stages throughout Broadway and downtown, every Broadway bar is also open with additional live music. You don’t even have to be 21 to enter some bars during the daylight hours.
Considering that it is so easy to leave the festival grounds and come back, you can easily pack your own food or travel 10-15 minutes away for much cheaper meals. On the grounds, the typical meal is $12-14 and a beer costs around $10.
Outside of parking, stadium tickets and hotel fees, I spent less than $100 while at the festival. That includes gas as I stayed 30 minutes away from the actual festival.
For country lovers and Nashville enthusiasts, there is truly no festival like CMA Fest. This would be a perfect excuse to finally get that affordable Nashville- as affordable as Nashville can be- trip you’ve been talking about with all your college friends.

Music Midtown is Atlanta’s premier music festival, attracting music lovers from all over the Southeast. Held in Atlanta’s beautiful Piedmont Park, this festival boasts a diverse lineup of artists, making it a great choice for college students with eclectic tastes.
Music Midtown features an impressive mix of genres, from rock and pop to hip-hop and electronic dance music. Previous lineups have included acts like Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons, and Arctic Monkeys. The festival takes place in the heart of Atlanta, allowing you to explore the city’s vibrant culture, food scene, and nightlife in between sets.
Piedmont Park offers plenty of green spaces where you can relax, play frisbee, or have a picnic with friends when you need a break from the music.
One day passes are also available for Music Midtown, making it easier to save money and see that one artist you’ve been dying to see.
With plenty of nice suburbs of Atlanta, it is very easy to find somewhere to stay for a bit cheaper if you are willing to drive to the venue each day.

Bonnaroo is more than just a music festival; it’s a full-blown camping adventure that attracts both college students and music enthusiasts. Located on a farm in Manchester, Tennessee, Bonnaroo offers a unique and communal festival experience.
One of Bonnaroo’s defining features is its camping setup. You can camp with your friends, meet new people, and immerse yourself in a vibrant community of festival-goers.
Bonnaroo consistently curates a diverse lineup featuring top artists from various genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Past headliners include Eminem, The Killers, and Childish Gambino. Beyond the music, Bonnaroo offers interactive art installations, yoga sessions, comedy shows, and even a silent disco, creating a 24/7 entertainment experience.
Considering that you don’t have to pay for travel to the venue each day or hotel, Bonnaroo (aka roo) cuts down on some of the additional costs associated with going to a music festival. Many college students dream of a camping trip in the woods, so why not do it while also seeing some of your favorite music artists?

Rock the South is a music festival that celebrates southern culture and showcases the best of country and rock music. Located in Cullman, Alabama, it’s a southern charm that college students won’t want to miss. Rock the South brings together country and rock music for a unique blend of musical experiences. You can enjoy the twang of country tunes and the energy of rock anthems in one place.
Located near Smith Lake, attendees can easily spend the day on the lake and their nights watching incredible music performances. The venue offers on-site camping, but there are also nearby hotels or houses that can be rented out for the event.
Previous lineups have featured legendary artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kid Rock, ensuring that Rock the South is a haven for classic rock and country music enthusiasts.
Rock the South is a very casual festival, so you won’t be breaking the bank on outfits for the event. Pro Tip: don’t wear your $300+ boots to the venue since the event literally takes place on a cow pasture. Alcoholic drinks cost about $10-14 depending on the drink and the food is comparable to any other event.
If you want to truly experience the essence of the southeast at a festival, then I highly recommend Rock the South. For tickets under $300, you can see concerts that would otherwise be sold out. Overall, Rock the South is a perfect festival for any student on a budget that loves country or rock music.
