Winter Break: Georgia Edition

Share

Growing up in Georgia, winter break has always been a special time for me. While many people associate the winter holidays with snow and cold weather, Georgia offers a unique twist with its mild temperatures and Southern charm. I’ve spent countless winters enjoying the beauty and warmth that our state has to offer. From cozy mountain towns to festive city celebrations, there’s always something to look forward to during the holidays. As someone who has experienced Georgia’s winter magic firsthand, I’m excited to share some of my favorite things to do over winter break. Whether you’re a local or visiting, there’s no shortage of ways to embrace the season in Georgia, and I hope my suggestions inspire you to explore all that this beautiful state has to offer during the holidays.

Atlantic City

Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Georgia, is known for its festive atmosphere during the holiday season, offering several fun events that make it a must-visit spot. I grew up visiting here during the holidays and it is a Georgia staple. One of the main attractions is the Winter Wonderland Parade, which is a lively event featuring holiday-themed floats, live music, and a festive vibe. I remember they even had a large snow cannon for kids to play in, pretty sure they were just bubbles though. But, it marks the beginning of the Christmas season in the area and is perfect for families and visitors looking to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit.

Another fan favorite you can also enjoy is the Holiday Market, which offers a variety of local goods, food, and holiday-themed items to help you get into the seasonal mood. If you’re in the area, you won’t want to miss the Lighting of the Tree event either, which is an annual tradition where the station’s towering Christmas tree is illuminated in a dazzling ceremony to kick off the festivities. The events throughout the season at Atlantic Station create a warm, welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy the holiday season in Atlanta.

Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain, Georgia, is a popular spot during the holiday season, offering several fun events and activities. One of the standout attractions is the Stone Mountain Christmas celebration, which is held annually. This event features a spectacular lighting display, complete with over two million lights. Visitors can enjoy a variety of festive experiences, including the enchanting Snow Mountain, where they can go sledding down a man-made hill of real snow. This area is perfect for families, offering a winter wonderland atmosphere even in the South’s typically mild winter weather.

In addition to sledding, Stone Mountain hosts various holiday-themed activities such as character meet-and-greets, a Christmas parade, and holiday-themed train rides. The park also has a Christmas Village with shops selling seasonal goods, hot cocoa stands, and other treats that add to the festive charm. The Laser Show during the evening is another popular feature, combining music, lights, and a fireworks display, all set against the massive Stone Mountain itself. It really is such. cool event that they put on there and I still go every year with friends!

For those seeking more than just festive lights and sledding, Stone Mountain’s Adventure Pass gives access to various park activities like hiking and the scenic gondola ride that offers stunning views of the area. The park also has winter-themed shows and performances throughout the holiday season.

Blue Ridge Mountains

Every year, my friends and I make a tradition of renting a cabin in the North Georgia mountains for a long weekend. It’s the perfect getaway to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, especially during the holiday season. We spend our days hiking through the trails, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the breathtaking views. The trails are beautiful year-round, but there’s something special about hiking in the winter months when everything is peaceful and still.

While we’re up there, the region is filled with festive events that make it feel like we’re in a winter wonderland. Many towns in the North Georgia mountains, such as Blue Ridge and Ellijay, host Christmas celebrations with their own unique charm. For example, Blue Ridge offers a Holiday Express Train ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the holiday decorations in a cozy train while sipping on hot cocoa. Another favorite event is the Georgia Mountain Christmas in Helen, where the entire town is transformed into a Bavarian-style Christmas village with thousands of twinkling lights, a Christmas parade, and other festive activities. Whether it’s attending a Christmas concert in a local church or visiting a holiday market, there’s always something to get us in the Christmas spirit during our North Georgia cabin retreat.

Helen

Helen, Georgia, is a charming Bavarian-style village also nestled in the North Georgia mountains that transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. Known for its quaint alpine architecture and scenic beauty, Helen takes on an extra layer of magic as the entire town is adorned with thousands of twinkling lights, creating a truly festive atmosphere. One of the highlights is the Georgia Mountain Christmas festival, where the town hosts a Christmas parade, local artisans, live music, and holiday performances. The streets are lined with shops selling handmade gifts, perfect for finding a unique present for loved ones.

The village’s Bavarian-style shops and restaurants also bring the spirit of the holidays to life, with festive decorations and traditional German fare, making it a unique destination to embrace both Christmas and the cozy mountain vibe. Helen’s small-town charm and family-friendly activities make it a perfect place to enjoy the holidays with friends and family in a truly magical setting.

Alpharetta

Alpharetta is a town just outside of Atlanta that goes all out for the holidays. It is such fun area year-round and truly turns into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. My mom (who reads these blogs) actually is one of the event planners for the City of Alpharetta so I have to say unbiasedly that this is the best place to visit! The city’s annual “Alpharetta Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony” kicks off the festivities each year, drawing both locals and visitors. This event typically features live music, holiday treats, and the lighting of a grand Christmas tree in the heart of downtown Alpharetta. It’s an event that brings the community together to kick off the holiday season with cheer.

For those who love seeing homes lit up for the holidays, Alpharetta’s “Holiday Light Tour” is a must-see. This event showcases some of the best decorated homes in the area, with many families going all out to create incredible light displays synchronized to music. Whether driving or walking, it’s a magical experience that showcases the town’s festive spirit.

Additionally, “The Nutcracker” performances by local theater companies are a beloved tradition in Alpharetta. The city’s various performing arts centers host productions of this classic holiday ballet, bringing festive entertainment to families year after year.

Avalon

Avalon is a shopping center located in Alpharetta but it deserves its own shoutout! One of the main attractions in Alpharetta during the holiday season is the “Avalon on Ice” at Avalon, an upscale shopping district. The outdoor ice skating rink is a highlight for visitors of all ages, offering a fun way to enjoy the winter chill while surrounded by twinkling lights and festive decorations. They deck out the area in gorgeous lights right in front of the Christmas tree. They also hosts a variety of seasonal events, such as holiday markets and Santa visits, making it a great spot for holiday shopping and family outings.

For those looking to enjoy yet another holiday market, Avalon’s Christmas Market typically offers a range of handmade crafts, artisanal gifts, and holiday treats, perfect for finding something special for loved ones. The holiday lights and festive ambiance make Avalon a go-to destination for those looking to get into the Christmas spirit. Whether you’re there to skate, shop, or simply enjoy the decorations, Avalon provides a magical holiday experience.

Atlanta Botanical Gardens

I first found out about this from my grandpa who actually works there and I go every year with my family, it is SUCH a cool place. It genuinely is one of the most magical holiday experiences in Atlanta, the Garden Lights, Holiday Nights display transforms the Botanical Garden into a glowing winter wonderland. This annual event features millions of lights illuminating the garden, creating dazzling light displays like the “Orchid Cascade” and “Ice Goddess.” Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the garden while sipping hot chocolate or taking a stroll through the luminous pathways. It’s a must-see for those who appreciate both nature and holiday lights.

The Fox Theater

The Fox Theatre in Atlanta is one of the city’s most iconic venues and in my opinion a rite of passage for anyone visiting during the holiday season. zit becomes a hub for festive performances and events, making it a perfect spot for getting into the Christmas spirit. The theatre itself is a grand, historic landmark, known for its opulent interiors and lavish architecture, setting a magical stage for holiday performances.

One of the most beloved events at the Fox Theatre during the Christmas season is the annual performance of The Nutcracker by the Atlanta Ballet which is a MUST. This production has become a holiday tradition for many families in the Atlanta area, offering a dazzling performance with stunning sets, elegant costumes, and the timeless music of Tchaikovsky. The show typically runs in early to mid-December, bringing the classic holiday tale of Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Mouse King to life on the grand stage. The orchestra, along with the talented dancers of the Atlanta Ballet, makes this a must-see event for anyone who appreciates holiday traditions or the performing arts.
