Forza Horizon 3: The Joy of Playing Multiplayer

Written By: Xavier Routt

There is something special about Forza Horizon 3 that makes it difficult to explain to someone who never experienced it during its prime. Released in 2016, the game gave players an enormous open world in Australia, hundreds of cars, and countless roads to explore. However, what made the game truly memorable was not just the cars or the beautiful scenery. It was the memories made playing multiplayer with friends.

I remember how exciting it was to load into the game and decide what to do. Sometimes, we would spend hours racing against each other, trying to prove who had the fastest car. Other times, we would forget about racing entirely and drive around the map without any real destination. We could turn a simple drive into an adventure just by challenging each other to reach a certain location first.

One of the best parts of multiplayer was how unpredictable everything felt. You never knew what your friends would do next. Someone might pick an absurdly fast supercar, while someone else would bring a completely unexpected vehicle. Before long, we would be racing through the Australian countryside, crashing into fences, flying off hills, and laughing at the ridiculous situations we created. Winning was fun, but some of the funniest moments happened when everything went wrong.

The open world made those experiences even better. Australia felt like a giant playground where the roads were only suggestions. We could drive through forests, cruise along beaches, or climb winding mountain roads. There was always somewhere new to explore, even if we had already spent dozens of hours playing. The freedom to do whatever we wanted made every session feel different.

I think that freedom is what made Forza Horizon 3 multiplayer so enjoyable. Many multiplayer games revolve around competition, rankings, and winning. Horizon 3 offered those things, but it also allowed players to enjoy each other’s company without taking anything seriously. We could spend an entire evening doing almost nothing productive in the game and still have an incredible time.

Looking back, I realize that the game was about more than driving virtual cars. It was about spending time with people and sharing experiences. Multiplayer gave us a reason to come together, even when we had nothing specific planned. A random race could become a lasting memory, and a casual drive could turn into hours of laughter.

There was also something satisfying about building a collection of cars together. Everyone had different tastes. Some players loved Japanese cars, while others preferred American muscle cars or European supercars. Showing off a new car, comparing custom paint jobs, and testing different builds became part of the fun. Even choosing what to drive could lead to conversations and friendly arguments.

Today, racing games have become more advanced, with better graphics, larger maps, and even more content. Yet, newer technology cannot automatically recreate the feeling of playing an older game with friends. Sometimes, nostalgia makes us remember the small details more clearly than the big ones. We remember the music playing in the background, the cars we used most often, and the nights when nobody wanted to log off.

That is what Forza Horizon 3 represents to me. It reminds me of a time when gaming felt simple. I did not need a complicated objective or a competitive ranking to enjoy myself. I just needed a car, an open road, and friends willing to join the adventure.

Perhaps that is why the game remains so memorable. Its greatest achievement was not simply creating a beautiful racing game. It created a space where ordinary moments could become extraordinary memories.

When I think about Forza Horizon 3, I do not only think about its races or its cars. I think about the laughter, the friendly competition, and the freedom of exploring Australia with other people. Those experiences are difficult to replace because they were never really about the game itself. They were about the people who played it with me.

And sometimes, the best memories in gaming come from the moments when you are not trying to accomplish anything at all. You are simply driving, talking, laughing, and enjoying the ride. That is the joy of Forza Horizon 3 multiplayer, and that is why I will always remember it.
