All things post-graduation

Share

I feel so old writing this! I was just a freshman not even thinking about adulting! Applying for internships, looking at housing in cities, and going through interview processes have gotten me thinking about life after college. The college lifestyle is so perfect! I love my little routine, friends, and overall my college bubble. It is weird to think about getting out of it. In this blog, we are going to chat about all things post-college. Let’s get into it!

One of the most significant changes post-grad is the shift in autonomy. Graduates often experience:

  1. Increased Independence: Without the constraints of classes and assignments, graduates have more freedom to structure their days as they choose. This newfound freedom can be exciting but also overwhelming as you navigate daily responsibilities.
  2. Personal Responsibility: With independence comes the need to manage responsibilities such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, and potentially living away from family for the first time. This transition can be a steep learning curve.

Internships

As I mentioned, I was just going through an internship interview process. The process took FOREVER! But, it was well worth it because I ended up getting the position. The interview process was 4 rounds with 2 calls in addition to the actual interviews. I am a very qualified candidate with tons of experience and a great education. Yet, I applied to 43 internships and have only heard back from 4 to move forward with the process. I can’t hear “we regret to inform you” one more time! Internships are a crucial part of the post-graduate journey. They offer invaluable real-world experience, helping to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional application. Here are a few tips from me regarding internships.

Tips:

  1. Practical Experience: Internships provide hands-on experience in your chosen field, allowing you to apply classroom theories in a professional setting. This experience is not only beneficial for skill development but also gives you a clearer idea of what to expect in your career.
  2. Networking Opportunities: Interning allows you to meet industry professionals, potentially leading to valuable connections. Networking is a key component of job searching, and the relationships you build during your internship can provide references or even job offers down the line.
  3. Resume Builder: A well-structured resume is critical in today’s job market. Internships add relevant experience to your resume, showcasing your initiative and ability to work in a professional environment.
  4. Skill Development: Internships help you develop both hard and soft skills. Whether it’s mastering industry-specific software or honing your communication and teamwork abilities, these skills are invaluable as you transition to full-time employment.
  5. When interviewing, the interviewer is looking for someone they wouldnt mind spending 40 hours a week with. Be yourself and maintain a professional demeanor, but be positive and friendly.

Resumes

  1. Tailor Your Resume: Customize your resume for each position you apply to, highlighting experiences and skills that align with the job description. Use action verbs and quantify achievements when possible to make your contributions stand out.
  2. Keep It Concise: Aim for a one-page resume, especially if you have limited work experience. Be clear and concise, focusing on the most relevant information.
  3. Professional Format: Use a clean, professional format that is easy to read. Avoid excessive graphics or fonts that could distract from the content.

Professional Attire

This is a category of post-grad life and professionalism that is not talked about enough! Your attire for an interview is crucial. Dressing appropriately can significantly impact first impressions. Here are some tips:

  1. Know the Company Culture: Research the company’s dress code. If you’re unsure, opt for business professional attire, which is typically more formal.
  2. Choose Professional and Comfortable Clothing: Wear clothes that fit well and make you feel confident. Avoid overly casual attire, and ensure your shoes are polished and appropriate.
  3. Limit Accessories and Fragrance: Keep accessories simple and minimal. Strong fragrances can be off-putting, so opt for light scents or none at all.
  4. If you are unsure of the dress code, it is better to dress up! You will never be looked down upon for being more professional than you have to be.

Housing

Once you’ve secured a job, the next big step is often moving to a new city or finding a suitable place to live. This transition comes with its own set of challenges.

  1. Research Neighborhoods: Take the time to explore potential neighborhoods where you might want to live. Consider factors like proximity to work, safety, and amenities.
  2. Budgeting: Determine how much you can afford to spend on rent and utilities. A general guideline is to spend no more than 30% of your monthly income on housing.
  3. Consider Roommates: Sharing an apartment can significantly reduce costs. Look for compatible roommates to split rent and utilities.
Financial Adjustments

Graduates often face financial challenges as they transition into the workforce:

Student Loans: Many graduates carry student loan debt, which can add stress as they start their careers. Understanding repayment options and managing debt is crucial.

Budgeting: Creating a budget is essential to manage living expenses, especially if income is lower than expected. Graduates may need to adjust their lifestyle and spending habits.

Living Arrangements: Many new grads move out of their parents’ homes, often leading to additional expenses such as rent, utilities, and groceries. Finding affordable housing can be challenging, particularly in urban areas.

Jobs and the job market

The job market can be unpredictable, influenced by various factors such as economic conditions, industry growth, and technological advancements. Here are some current trends to keep in mind as you navigate your job search:

  1. Utilize LinkedIn: Optimize your LinkedIn profile and actively engage with professionals in your field. Join industry-specific groups and participate in discussions to expand your network.
  2. Attend Job Fairs: Job fairs are excellent opportunities to meet potential employers. Bring plenty of resumes and be prepared to make a strong impression.
  3. Informational Interviews: Reach out to professionals in your desired field for informational interviews. These can provide insight into the industry and potentially lead to job opportunities.

Friends and relationships

Transitioning to post-graduate life can be challenging, and having a solid support system is essential. Here’s how to cultivate friendships and maintain relationships during this phase:

  1. Join Professional Organizations: Many industries have professional associations that offer networking events and social gatherings. These can be great places to meet like-minded individuals.
  2. Explore Local Activities: Attend local events, workshops, or community classes to meet new people in your area. Whether it’s a book club, fitness class, or volunteering opportunity, engaging in shared interests can foster friendships.
  3. Be Open and Approachable: Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations with colleagues or acquaintances. Building relationships takes time, but being friendly and open can help establish connections.
Continued Learning and Growth

Post-grad life often involves ongoing personal and professional development:

Further Education: Some graduates choose to pursue additional degrees or certifications to enhance their qualifications. This can be beneficial in competitive fields or for career advancement.

Skill Development: The need for continuous learning is important in many industries. Many graduates seek online courses, workshops, or training programs to stay competitive.

Self-Discovery: This phase can be a time of exploration and self-discovery. Graduates often take the time to figure out their passions, interests, and long-term career goals.

Mental Health and Well-Being

The transition to post-grad life can be mentally and emotionally taxing:

Stress and Anxiety: The pressure to find a job, manage finances, and build a new life can lead to stress and anxiety. It’s important to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed.

Work-Life Balance: Adjusting to a full-time work schedule can be challenging. Graduates often need to establish boundaries to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Finding Purpose: Many new graduates struggle with finding meaning in their work and life. Engaging in hobbies, volunteering, or exploring interests outside of work can help provide fulfillment.

Final advice:

Keep learning: Continue your professional development to support long-term career growth.

Build your skills: Recognize your strengths and build new skills. Use your skills and experiences to advance in your career.

Compete with yourself: Set goals and try to exceed them. For example, you could set a goal to apply to four jobs per day and try to apply to five or more.

Respect everyone: Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position.

Review your resume: Include your education, degrees, graduation years, and honors to show employers you have the knowledge and work ethic for the job.

Volunteer: Volunteering can help you gain confidence, skills, and experience that will make you more employable.

Be open to change: Don’t get discouraged if your first job doesn’t work out, as it may open up other opportunities.

Be patient: Fill your time with hobbies that you enjoy and that can also help you advance as a person.
