When I was growing up, the month leading up to a new school year was always reserved for back-to-school preparation. From a fresh haircut to picking out my new pair of tennis shoes, it set the precedent for the year ahead. The night before the first day was the equivalent of Christmas Eve for me. It was also the only day I actually planned my outfit the day before. There was excitement in the unknown. There was comfort in the newness. Who would I have class with? Would I like all my teachers? How has everyone changed over the summer? What is different about campus? These questions raced my mind up until the bell rang at 8 o’clock on the dot.
Now, as a senior in college, I still ask those same questions leading up to the start of a new school year. Except this year, I did not have weeks leading up to the new school year devoted to preparation. I actually rolled in halfway through the syllabus week after a long summer of work and a cancelled flight that delayed my arrival back to campus. I was just hoping it would all work out. And so far, it has been. Along the way, there have been products and items that I have started to rely on in the new school year.
Rayna, my ‘just chatting’ counterpart, and I have compiled a list of all the things that have become our companions in studying, long class days and weekend plans. From assignment trackers to our favorite products, we have got you covered in this new school year.
Anastasia Brow Freeze

Kinley: To kick off the list, I am starting with an item that is a tried-and-true staple for me. I use this daily, even when I just roll out of bed and run to class. It is a simple task that helps me feel more put together. The product’s name is true. Your brows will not budge. I find myself reaching for this product daily, whether or not I put makeup on.
Assignment Tracker

Assignment Tracker from Reddit
Kinley: This is arguably the most important item I have on the list. The one I currently use is one I found on Reddit. It’s very elaborate, and as someone who is extremely Type B, it has been very beneficial. It does everything for you, from color-coding by class to giving an assignment due-date countdown. It even has a “percentage done” circle where you can see the progress you have made in terms of coursework for the semester. Each semester, I download each syllabus from my classes and use that to fill everything out. It takes about an hour for me to complete it, but it is well worth it for the efficiency it offers.
Baublebar Fallon Round Bezel Earrings

Kinley: I had my eye on these earrings for quite some time. Now, they are my everyday pair of earrings. They do not tarnish and can be worn in the shower. They are simple enough to wear to class while being a classic choice with any outfit for going out. With the craziness of college, I rely on simplicity for things like jewelry. The bezel cut is a timeless pick, and the size is perfectly subtle.
Coffee Maker

Kinley: Unfortunately, I do have a caffeine dependency. Enjoying the benefits of a coffee maker not only gives an extra boost of energy but has also become a relaxing part of my routine. I am trying to learn how to make different lattes at home that aren’t full of sugar and pricey. My go-to latte is currently two shots of espresso, almond milk, a dollop of honey and a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt. I favor matcha over coffee, but until I can master a matcha latte or find a matcha latte machine, I’ll stick with the convenience of a coffee maker.
“Due Gooder” App

Rayna: Taking 19 credit hours as a senior is no joke. With a busy schedule, having resources that streamline assignments and responsibilities is essential. Just like Kinley’s assignment tracker, it puts all your assignments in one place. It is an app you can have on your phone, tablet, or MacBook. An additional perk is the ability to upload your notes, and the app will make flashcards or practice tests.
Dunkin’s Green Tea Refresher

Rayna: College students run on Dunkin’. To start my day, I always make sure to stop by and get my go-to drink order. My current order is a strawberry dragonfruit green tea refresher. The drink offers both vitamins and energy. If green tea isn’t your thing, you can always replace it with coconut milk or lemonade with a little less caffeine.
Eye Patches

Kinley: I have fallen for the eye patch trend and I am not mad about it. After late nights of studying and hanging out with friends, they help me look more awake. I found my favorite patches from Ulta. They offer a good amount for the price you pay.
PRO TIP: Stick the eye patches in the fridge for a cooling effect on your under eyes.
Jeans

Kinley: As I have gotten older, I have acquired an appreciation for a good pair of jeans. They can easily make you feel more “put together” when you are in a hurry. Throwing on a pair of jeans for dinner or a presentation is good practice for post-grad, right? I prefer wide-leg jeans or a good flare. Taking the time to go shopping around different places for a pair of jeans that makes you feel good is a great investment.
KARHU Mestari Run 2.0 Tennis Shoes

KAHRU Mestari 2.0 Tennis Shoes
Kinley: One thing I was taught growing up was the importance — and privilege — of having a good pair of tennis shoes. I am very thankful that my parents always made sure I had a fresh pair of tennis shoes that were comfortable and durable for all the activities I was involved in. Now, I take the time once or twice a year to go get a nice pair. My most recent tennis shoe purchase was the KARHU Mestari Run 2.0 tennis shoes from Fleet Feet. They are made in Finland and I’m honestly obsessed. I’m only 5’3” so I love a shoe that gives me a boost of height while offering support for being flat-footed. Fleet Feet offers free 3D foot scanning and brand knowledge to help pick out the best shoes for you. They also have a shoe bin donation for your old pairs.
Matching Sets

Kinley: I greatly value efficiency and have discovered that matching sets for class helps with that. It is so nice to be able to just grab a matching set rather than having to think about putting together an outfit that matches. Whether I am going to work out or head to class, I find myself reaching for my matching sets first. The best part is that they can be found at multiple different price points and style ranges. I prefer shorts or leggings with a matching tank top.
Meal Prepping

Rayna & Kinley: Meal prepping nutritious meals each week has become essential for us. I took a nutrition class my sophomore year (highly recommend!) and it changed everything for me. I learned beyond baseline knowledge on proteins, carbs and fats, along with their different functions within our bodies. Taking the time to think about how you’re fueling your body is another investment that is definitely worth it. The best part about meal prepping is that it can be simple or elaborate. Setting aside a couple of hours to prep meals can set you up for a healthier and more productive week.
Reusable Water Bottle

Kinley: Hydration! I carry my reusable water bottle everywhere. This might be an obvious necessity I have listed, but it is important. You can also use it as a form of self-expression by picking out a water bottle in your favorite color or print.
Self-Care Bag

Rayna: I have a self-care bag that I carry everywhere. It is filled with all the essentials from mascara to gum. I keep my EADEM lip balm in there. Sometimes I will throw a snack in there just in case I get hungry! It is so easy to throw in your backpack and have it throughout a busy school day.
The Moments Journal

The Moments Journal by Lexi Hidalgo
Rayna: When school gets overwhelming, this is my solution. This book was written by an influencer, Lexi Hidalgo, offering affirmations and insight to ground you in stressful moments. It includes prompts that allow you to write out your thoughts.
