Bama Rush: ‘OOTD’

What is Bama Rush?

“Bama Rush” refers to the sorority recruitment process at the University of Alabama, one of the largest and most prestigious Greek life systems in the country. Sorority recruitment, or “rush,” is the intense, multi-day process where potential new members (PNMs) go through a series of rounds to meet members of different sororities in hopes of receiving a bid (invitation to join). While rush happens at many universities across the U.S., Bama Rush stands out for a few key reasons — namely, the scale and the spectacle that surrounds it.

The Rounds of Rush:

Bama Rush is divided into different rounds, and each round has its own dress code, which encourages participants to really think about how they want to present themselves. The outfits chosen for these rounds are often just as important — if not more — than the conversations they’ll have with sorority members.

Open House Round:

Think of it as an opportunity to make a great first impression with your outfit. Light, airy dresses in pastel colors, summer skirts, and blouses are common.

Philanthropy Round:

Here, participants tend to wear more polished outfits, often with a touch of sophistication. Think sundresses, skirts, or blouses paired with heels or cute flats. It’s important to strike a balance between looking put-together while still maintaining an approachable vibe.

Sisterhood Round:

Dresses and skirts with unique details like lace or embroidery, paired with accessories like statement earrings or colorful shoes, are all the rage. It’s a chance for PNMs to show off their personal style.

Preference Round:

This is the final day before the bids are given out, and fashion here often goes all out. Women often choose their most formal, elegant outfits for this round. Think cocktail dresses, chic heels, and polished hair and makeup. The goal is to make a lasting impression with your style.

Bid Day!!!

The most important part of Bid Day fashion is wearing the official sorority t-shirt, called a Bid Day Jersey, that you receive when you receive your bid. These shirts often feature your sorority’s Greek letters and other fun, personalized designs.

Fashion in Bama Rush is more than just about looking good; it’s a crucial part of the overall process. Each sorority has its own “brand” and identity, and potential new members are encouraged to reflect their personality and style in a way that aligns with the image of the sorority they hope to join.
