Background on Euphoria
The HBO hit show Euphoria highlights the drama and journey of how Gen-Z navigates the trials of life involving substance abuse, sex, and relationships in the age of social media. Throughout the show, teenagers are shown to be utterly dependent on drugs and other substances to subside the pains of high school.
Euphoria’s Graphic Depiction of Teenage Life
Whether or not this accurately represents teenage life is up for debate. While this might not directly resonate with most teenagers about how they live their lives and their standards of living, I’m sure the idea of hiding experiences from your parents and the way the show portrays the twisted ways of high school seems oddly familiar to most. On the other hand, most will say that television needs an extremely raw depiction of how drugs, even when considered “harmless,” can still destroy your life and the lives of those around you. Through the main character Rue who suffers the most from substance abuse, during times of her high, we are allowed an inside look into what she is experiencing and maybe understand the comfort she is provided by doing these drugs instead of wondering why she keeps using. This abuse also speaks to our generation in ways of craving experience and a sense of dangerous excitement that allows for a rush. While in real life, we want to obtain that excitement but are often too scared to put ourselves out there. The difference within Euphoria is that the characters are not afraid to live regardless of the consequences of life. Because some people do not struggle with such extreme issues while in high school, the show can often be seen as pushing boundaries in ways that are too over the top to attract a hungry audience enjoying the drama instead of being genuine.
Euphoria Theories
If you are an avid watcher of Euphoria, then you know that there are some jaw-dropping theories about season two.
The first and most agreed-upon theory by most people is that the main character, Rue, is already dead or foreshadows her death during season two. This is believed to be true by the first episode, where we are given an image of Rue in the womb, and many appear to think that throughout the show, she is telling about her life and experiences before she passes. In the show, Rue says, “I was once happy, content, sloshing around in my own private, primordial pool. Then one day, for reasons beyond my control, I was repeatedly crushed by the cruel cervix of my mother, Leslie. I put up a good fight, but I lost for the first time, but not the last.” Fans seem to think that she is referring to losing for the last time as her soon death. With Rue continuing to flirt with death through her uncontrollable substance abuse, her fate is still unknown.
Other Questions Euphoria Viewers Have
Another question people have about the show is: who is Nate’s little brother in the family portrait but is never shown? People have many different theories to answer this question of the mysterious younger brother that has never been referenced. These include, Fezco’s younger brother actually being Nate’s brother. This is suspected due to the very eerie resemblance between his baby picture and the picture in the portrait. Another suggests that the boy results from an affair between his mother and an old lover.
Another theory could be that not only is Rue foreshadowing her future, but Nate is too. After Fezco attacks Nate, he begins to have vivid dreams about what his life would look like with a pregnant Cassie instead of Maddy, and Rue’s narration declares they are in love, most think of this to be foreshadowing instead of just a dream and expect for Cassie to announce in later episodes she is pregnant.
While people have come up with their own theories as to why the characters do what they do and how they act and have made their own judgments about who their favorites are throughout the show, people continue to obsess about this series due to its addictive chills. People will continue to come back for more due to the deeper issues covered in the show that either we have experienced or are experiencing in our lives now.
