A night out with your friends drinking is fun and whether you remember it or not. However, nursing a hangover is not how to wrap up your weekend. So here are the top, in no particular order, hangover cures to avoid the hangxiety and revive yourself after the weekend.
- Bacon-egg & cheese breakfast sandwich
This remedy is the essential greasy hangover breakfast often thought of after a night of drinking. This is our go-to hangover remedy in the morning after drinking. However, there are times when food seems impossible to stomach. The science behind a bacon-egg & cheese breakfast sandwich that helps ease your hangover is the amino acids the sandwich contains work to break down the alcohol in your system.
- Liquid IV
Taking electrolytes keeps you hydrated and is a powder to mix into water or Gatorade. Powers like Liquid IV work in your bloodstream immediately to hydrate you. It also can lighten your hangover if taken before going to bed after a night out. Drinking one coming home after the bar with a ton of water helps wake up with minimal to no hangover.
- Pain Relievers
Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or aspirin relieve hangovers, headaches, and body aches. However, pain relievers like Tylenol will negatively impact the liver after drinking alcohol. The hangover headache is awful to wake up to, but Advil quickly gets rid of the pain.
- Rub a slice of lemon under your armpit
As absurd as it sounds, rubbing a slice of lemon on your armpit has been proven to help hangovers. The science behind it is that lemon juice is absorbed into your armpits to treat dehydration and makes you smell nice as an added bonus. Lemon also naturally balances pH levels in the body aiding with the digestion of alcohol.
- Pickle Juice
The reason behind pickle juice is because of the loss of electrolytes and dehydration after drinking. Pickle juice contains high amounts of potassium and sodium to replenish your electrolytes. As good as it is for you, I can’t stomach drinking pickle juice while hungover. Additionally, there are other ways to hydrate and get electrolytes that don’t make me want to puke my brains out.
- Coffee
There is no evidence that coffee helps when hungover the next day, but caffeine does help sober you up before bed. The only way coffee helps hangover symptoms is if you experience caffeine withdrawal when not drinking coffee in the morning. Caffeine also helps relieve headaches, so a nice warm cup of coffee hungover might bring you back to life.
- Pedialyte
This is a favorite hangover remedy that works every time for me. Pedialyte packs a hydration punch replenishing the body’s electrolytes and fully rehydrates you after drinking. Pedialyte can also boost energy, which is perfect if you can’t spend all day in bed. A good substitute for Pedialyte is Gatorade, both are similar, and Gatorade does take a bit better than Pedialyte.
- IV Drip
IV drips have been popular with the increase in hydration clinics that provide hangover relief. IV drip is the ideal way to replenish your body with electrolytes, water, and vitamins directly into your blood. The only downside to this remedy is that it is more expensive than buying a Pedialyte at CVS, and if you’re afraid of needles, this is not for you.
- Water!!
The most obvious remedy is to constantly drink water, preferably before you go to sleep, so you’re not waking up at 5am zombie walking to the Britta. Water is the most basic but essential way to treat a hangover after the alcohol has dehydrated your body.
- Continue drinking
If you don’t stop drinking, you won’t get hungover. Obviously, this method prolongs the hangover effects, and you should always hydrate. However, if you need to rally quickly, a mimosa in the morning is the best way.
