Horror Games and The One’s You Should Play

Share

While there’s no shortage of games being released at the moment, Maslin and I thought this week we would dive into a gaming category that most people are afraid to try. Horror games have the ability to get your adrenaline pumping and test your emotions. I remember when I was younger I watched my brother play Amnesia, which was an Action-Adventure horror game. The game took you through a haunted castle, where you had to solve puzzles to progress through, all while having to avoid different monsters and other dangers along the way. That game stuck with me so much because it delivered an experience that I didn’t think was possible in game and it was different from your typical call of duty.

Though Amnesia left a lasting impact on me, the horror game I will be streaming this week is Left 4 Dead 2. Released in the fall of 2009, Left 4 Dead 2 is a first person shooter set in the deep south during a zombie apocalypse and follows four survivors who are immune to the infection. Coach, Nick, Ellis, and Rochelle have gotten word that there’s an extraction point in New Orleans and decide it’s their best option to survive. The game includes five different campaigns that take you through infected malls, dark carnivals, and the swamps of louisiana. I remember vividly spending two months with my brothers trying to beat the carnival campaign and it’s still one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. While the game does have settings to change the difficulty, we never attempted anything other than expert mode, which I recommend.

Left 4 Dead 2 is well over twelve years old at this point, but the game was last updated in September of 2020. This shows that there is still a strong community within the game and you can often find players online without any trouble. Zombies have often been a popular choice when developing a horror game but in my opinion nothing has ever delivered a horror experience quite like Left 4 Dead 2. With co-op capability and up to four players in a squad, the game provides game modes for everyone’s liking. This Friday be sure to check out my stream as we dive into Left 4 Dead 2.

This week I, Maslin, will be diving into a unique horror game that puts you in an area and tells you to figure out what is haunting that area. This game is Phasmophobia, and it is one of my personal favorites in the horror genre. This game is excellent to play with friends and even better in VR. While most of the settings are in houses, players also get a dose of hauntings occurring in campsites.

Upon loading into the game, you and your team are in your team’s vehicle which houses all of the equipment needed to complete each mission. Outfitted with a monitor used to tap into the camera’s around the area, a whiteboard that lists your objectives along with the name of the ghost, a diagram of the area along with sanity meters for each player, and all the equipment that was purchased before entering the level. An interesting and fun part of Phasmophobia is the fact that each ghost has a unique name, and they will respond to this name if called upon. Be careful though, if you call their name too much they will start to hunt you. What happens when you are caught? Well… you get to follow alongside the ghost. Allowing you to see where the ghost is and where your friends are, but they do not get to see or hear you. So no need to worry about cheaters telling you exactly where the ghost is and ruining all the fun.

Come join my stream this Saturday at 10 a.m. and see me and my friends get scared straight while trying to hunt ghosts!
