It’s that time of the year, where college students are starting to secure internships and jobs for our future careers. In order to make sure that interview goes as planned, you have to dress the part! Depending on the requirement, and/or the job position, there are certain things you can and can’t wear in a formal environment when seeking employment. It’s all about looking professional. Your goal is to make a good impression, so that means taking care to choose the right outfit, even in a casual workplace setting.
- What NOT to wear
When choosing an outfit for an interview, you want to stay away from standing out too much. You want to make sure you are representing yourself, but in a more simple matter. Some things to stay away from include:
- Casual clothing.
- Sandals or flip-flops.
- Sneakers
- Clothes or shoes that don’t fit properly.
- Flashy clothes or jewelry (bright colors or statement pieces) .
- Stained or wrinkled clothing.
- Too much makeup.
- Revealing tops- shoulders showing, too low-cut

- What TO wear
I’ve always been told that as a female going on interviews, to choose solids instead of patterns. Solids look more classy and professional, whereas patterns might just be a little too much. If the office is business casual, wear dressy business casual. You may be asking yourself what exactly is dressy business casual? This is just business clothing without a tie. For us ladies, dressy business casual interview attire is a dark colored pants suit, preferably black, navy, or dark grey, or a sharp button-up shirt or a conservative blouse paired with trousers or a skirt. You could also wear a tailored dress.
