“New year, new me” is probably the most common phrase you’ll hear once January rolls around. For a lot of people, that fresh start comes with the same goal: losing weight. Wanting to feel healthier, more confident, and more energized is a great goal to have, but if we’re being honest, it can also feel extremely overwhelming at first. Between trying to figure out how many calories you should be eating, learning what macros are, and still wanting to enjoy eating out with friends, it’s easy to feel stuck before you even start.
One of the biggest misconceptions about weight loss is that you have to eat bland food or completely stop eating out. That might work short term, but it’s not realistic for college students, busy professionals, or anyone who still wants some balance in their life. The key isn’t eliminating restaurants, it’s learning how to order smarter. Convenience matters, especially when you’re juggling classes, workouts, and a social life.
One of the easiest ways to stay consistent with your diet while still eating out is to choose restaurants that offer online nutrition calculators. These tools allow you to build your exact meal and see the calories, protein, carbs, and fats before you order. That way, nothing feels like a guessing game. You know exactly what you’re putting into your body, which makes staying in a calorie deficit or hitting your protein goals much more manageable.
Each of the three spots below has a nutrition calculator you can use, and I’ve included the links so you can explore them yourself. As someone at UA who lost 50 pounds over the past year while still eating out regularly, these are my top three go-to places in Tuscaloosa for meals that are low calorie, high protein, and most importantly, still taste great.
Chipotle

You probably saw this one coming. Chipotle has earned its reputation among gym-goers and people trying to eat healthier, and for good reason. If you know what you’re doing, you can build a meal that’s filling, satisfying, and macro-friendly without feeling like you’re limiting yourself.
If your goal is lower calories, you’ll want to stick to either a burrito bowl or one of Chipotle’s lifestyle bowls, which is essentially their salad option. The main reason for skipping the burrito is simple: the tortilla. Chipotle’s flour tortilla alone is around 300 calories. Those are calories that don’t do much to keep you full compared to rice, beans, or protein. By skipping the wrap, you can allocate those calories toward ingredients that add volume and satiety.
When it comes to protein, chicken is your best option. The calorie-to-protein ratio is much better than steak, barbacoa, or carnitas, and if you’re serious about hitting your protein goals, double chicken is usually worth it. It adds a lot of protein without blowing up your calorie count.
Rice and beans are optional, but both can be included in moderation if they fit your day. They provide carbs and fiber, which help keep you full and give you energy for workouts. Where you really want to load up is vegetables and salsas. Fajita veggies, lettuce, and all three salsas add flavor and volume for minimal calories.
The main toppings to be cautious with are sour cream, queso, cheese, and guacamole. These aren’t bad foods, they’re just very calorie-dense. If you enjoy them, the key is awareness. As long as you budget them into your day, they can still fit into a weight loss plan.

My personal go-to order at Chipotle, which worked incredibly well for me, is a double chicken bowl with white rice and black beans. I add fajita veggies, lettuce, and all three salsas. This meal comes out to about 800 calories with 77 grams of protein. It’s filling, packed with fiber and carbs, and gives you plenty of energy for workouts.

Panda Express
Panda Express might not immediately come to mind when you think of healthy eating, but it can actually be a surprisingly solid option if you order correctly. The biggest rule here is to avoid fried items. Once you do that, the menu opens up in a much better way.
The grilled teriyaki chicken is easily your best choice. It’s high in protein and relatively low in calories compared to dishes like orange chicken or Beijing beef. If you want something different, black angus steak or broccoli beef are also decent options depending on your calorie needs for the day.
My go-to Panda Express order is a plate with double grilled teriyaki chicken and super greens instead of rice or chow mein. I usually add chili sauce and hot mustard, which add tons of flavor for essentially no extra calories. This meal comes in at around 680 calories with over 50 grams of protein. It’s filling, affordable, and honestly just as satisfying as higher-calorie options.
One of the underrated perks of Panda Express is the price. Compared to a lot of places, it’s cheaper than Chipotle while still delivering strong macros and great flavor.

Jersey Mike’s

This one surprises a lot of people, but Jersey Mike’s is hands down the number one option on this list. The reason is simple: subs in a tub. By ditching the bread and turning your sandwich into a bowl, you completely change the macro profile while keeping all the flavor.
Any sub can be turned into a bowl, but for the absolute best macros for your money, there’s one order that stands above the rest. It’s inspired by @formerfatguyfitness on Instagram and it’s honestly a cheat code.
Order the #9 Supreme Club Sub in a bowl with double meat, no cheese, no mayo, and no oil. Add mustard, hot relish, and any veggies you want.
The result is incredible. You’re getting multiple types of meat, tons of volume, and about 60 grams of protein for only 380 calories. On top of that, it’s massive. This bowl can easily be split into two meals, and it usually costs around $11. There’s arguably no better meal you can order when it comes to protein, calories, taste, and value.
I used to get this once a week during my weight loss journey, and it played a huge role in keeping me consistent. It never felt like a “diet meal,” and it kept me full for hours.

Conclusion
Losing weight doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite foods or avoiding eating out altogether. The most important part of any successful fitness journey is sustainability. When you learn how to order smarter and use tools like nutrition calculators, eating out becomes an asset instead of an obstacle.
By choosing high-protein options, limiting calorie-dense add-ons, and staying aware of portion sizes, you can enjoy meals from places like Chipotle, Panda Express, and Jersey Mike’s while still making progress toward your goals. These restaurants prove that you don’t need to sacrifice taste to eat in a way that supports weight loss.
If I was able to lose 50 pounds while still eating out regularly as a student at UA, it’s absolutely possible for anyone. Start small, stay consistent, and remember that progress comes from habits you can maintain long term, not perfection.
