Making the Perfect Halloween Playlist Doesn’t Have to Be Spooky

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year (or at least mine): spooky season. If you are anything like me, your pumpkins are already carved, house decorated, and costumes bought. However, the last crucial thing to do is to make the perfect Halloween playlist.

Of course, you have your classic Halloween songs that you have to include, but (just like zombies) there are some amazing underground songs crawling around out there.

Here’s to the best Halloween music: popular and not-so-popular (yet)

The Classics

Is it really Halloween without “Thriller” by Michael Jackson being overplayed?

If you are crafting a Halloween playlist, the first thing you will probably do is add some of the classic Halloween anthems:

· “Thriller” by Michael Jackson

· “Spooky, Scary Skeletons” by Andrew Gold

· “Heads Will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

· “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Picket, The Crypt-Kickers

· “Time Warp” by Little Nell, Patricia Quinn, Richard O’Brien

Not Halloween, but Spooky Enough

Some artists may not have had the intention of creating iconic Halloween songs (or maybe they did who knows?), but there are several songs that perfectly fit the Halloween playlist vibe:

· “Pyscho Killer” by Talking Heads

· “Living Dead Girl” by Rob Zombie

· “Feed my Frankenstein” by Alice Cooper

· “A Nightmare on My Street” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

· “Banana Boat (Day-O)” by Harry Belfonte

Off the Beaten Path

Once songs like “Thriller” and “Spooky, Scary Skeletons” start to get a little annoying, its time to switch things up by playing Halloween songs that everyone may not be as familiar with:

· “My Girlfriend is a Witch” by October Country

· “Season of the Witch” by Lana Del Rey

· “Drunk on Halloween” by Wallows

Essential Party Music

The thing about Halloween playlists are that it is very easy to get repetitive or over-spooky. In order to keep your playlist high energy, you have to mix in some classic party songs.

If you are hosting a Halloween party this year, your friends will thank you for giving them an excuse to scream their favorite songs at the top of their lungs.

Here are some of my favorite party songs that your friends will definitely know as well:

· “The Spins” by Mac Miller

· “Doses and Mimosas” by Cherub

· “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare” by Kid Cudi, MGMT, Ratatat

· “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus

· “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey
