As one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, Mullet Bay Beach is loved for its close proximity to the golf course, many resorts within walking distance, and delicious bars and restaurants. There’s so much to do for all ages and interests here. The beautiful crystal-clear water and walk-up beach bars make it perfect for a relaxing beach day. However, if the weather is right, this location is also popular for watersports where you can rent equipment right on the beach. There are beach chairs available for rent, however, with so much gorgeous white sand visitors can also bring their own chairs or even just a beach towel to create their own unique space for the day. The beach is very walkable and even on the far side of the beach, it is only a couple minute’s walk along the waterside to reach Rosie’s and Da Waterhole for refreshment or a snack. Location
Mullet Bay Beach is located on the southwestern side of the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. It is only a few minutes away from popular Maho Beach, however, it offers a much more relaxed atmosphere as it is rarely busy, and much more spacious. The beach is within walking distance of a few hotels and many residential properties. Mullet Bay is also near the American University of the Caribbean meaning you may see a few students. Due to its proximity to the university and apartments, the beach is also within walking distance of many amazing local restaurants such as Barcode and Fat Tony’s.
Bars and Restaurants
A long day on the beach will have you craving some food and a drink, especially if you partake in the watersports Mullet Bay has to offer. Luckily, there are three restaurants and snack bars on the beach that suit a variety of needs. Whether you’re looking for a nice sit-down meal or just a quick snack, Mullet Bay has got you covered. We visited all three establishments so we could give you the rundown of each.
Kalatua
If you’re looking for a luxurious lunch with a view or need a nice place to relax for the day, look no further than Kalatua. This upscale Mediterranean restaurant offers a wide array of dishes and appetizers. Some of our favorites were the calamari, shrimp, and tuna dip appetizers. All of the seafood was extremely fresh and tasted like it had been caught that day. For main courses, we enjoyed the pesto pasta and a variety of salads and burgers. They also offer a wide variety of cocktails. The pineapple drop is a vodka and pineapple-based drink, featuring chocolate bitters and topped with a vanilla cream foam. Another population was the coco loco, which is a coconut cream-based drink served in a dish that looks like a coconut.
Kalatua prides itself on being trendy and we can definitely see why. The restaurant has a very modern, beachy vibe. There are many photo ops, from at the table to in the beach chairs surrounded by palm trees. They also have a swing, where you can take gorgeous photos with the ocean in the background.
Aside from its delicious cuisine and cocktails, Kalatua also offers beach chair rentals. You can get two ocean-front chairs with an umbrella, two water bottles, and a towel for $45 a day. For second and third-row chairs, you will pay $38 a day. While these are pricier than other chairs on Mullet Bay, they are far more luxurious, featuring cushions and chair-side service.
If you are looking for the perfect luxurious beach day, Kalatua is your spot.
Rosie’s
During a long day at the beach, you may want to grab a quick cocktail or snack. Rosie’s is the perfect walk-up beach bar. They have a wide variety of margarita flavors for $9-10. When we went, they had a 2for $10 sex on the beach special. They also offer a good beer selection, including Presidente, Corona, and Carib.
If you find yourself hungry for a snack, Rosie’s has a great snack menu, including chicken tenders, fries, ribs, burgers, rice, and more. Most meals at Rosie’s range from $10-15, while you can grab a side of fries or a piece of chicken for $3-4.
For a chair outside of Rosie’s you can expect to pay $20 for two chairs and an umbrella.
Rosie’s is the perfect place to stop by for a quick snack and drink on a budget.
Da Waterhole
If you’re looking for the perfect in-between that combines luxury and convenience for a reasonable price, Da Waterhole is da place for you. They have an extensive cocktail and food menu, with the option to eat there or take it to go and enjoy it by the beach.
Most of the cocktails range from $10-14. We enjoyed their BBC and pina colada. They have a large selection of frozen and on-the-rocks drinks, with every base imaginable. The staff was extremely friendly, from the bartender to the waiters.
If you’re looking for a good meal while on the beach, Da Waterhole offers a variety of appetizers, barbeque, burgers, sandwiches, fresh fish, and more. Prices are extremely reasonable. Sandwiches are around $10, with hamburgers and hotdogs being even cheaper. Fresh fish ranges from $16-18, with fresh lobster available at market price. You can also get a snack off their “fingerling” menu from $6.50-8.95.
Their back seating area feels extremely luxurious, featuring nice wooden tables and palm trees. They also provide clean restrooms and a large misting fan, which was extremely refreshing. Da Waterhole is the perfect place to find ocean-front luxury on a budget.
Watersports
When looking for watersports, Mullet Bay Beach has everything a thrill seeker needs to have an amazing day in the sea. The bay is the perfect place to partake in activities as thrilling as surfing or as relaxing as paddleboarding. There is something for every interest made easy by rentals right on the beach by Mullet Watersports or Kalatua Watersports.
When the weather is windy and the waves are large, Mullet Bay is a popular place for surfing. According to Surf Forecast, the bay has dependable surf that is best in the winter and spring. For surf enthusiasts, this is perfect as it is outside of the island’s typical busy season. However, surf rentals are not available at the beach so those who wish to surf should plan to bring their own equipment.
Mullet Watersports offers Jet ski rentals and tours right on the beach. They are located in a tent between Rosie’s and Kalatua and also provide chair rentals.
Kalatua offers a variety of watersports such as glass bottom kayaks, paddleboards, and other environmentally friendly motorized devices. One such device is called a SeaBob which is an underwater propulsor that allows users to swim above or underwater up to a depth of 9 feet. Kalatua also offers Efoils, electric surfboards that skim above the water, and electric jet surfs that simulate surfing but without the waves. To add to the excitement there are also GoPros available to rent to record all your ocean adventures To learn more and for pricing information visit Kalatua’s website here!
