Over the past five decades, student life at the University of Alabama has shifted from completely offline and analog to fully digital and connected. While technology, fashion, and social norms changed each decade, Alabama football, Greek life, and campus traditions remained the constant anchors of the student experience.
The 70’s

In the 1970s, making plans meant landlines, paper flyers, and word of mouth. Students typed papers, studied in the library, and played records and 8-tracks in dorms. Bear Bryant led Alabama to national titles in 1973, 1978, and 1979. Big Al debuted at the 1979 Sugar Bowl, and the Iron Bowl was already central to campus culture. Greek life centered on frat parties and formals with live bands. ABBA, the Bee Gees, and “Sweet Home Alabama” were popular, and fashion was defined by bell-bottoms, platform shoes, and feathered hair.
The 80’s

The 1980s were still offline, with weekends built around Greek parties, formals, concerts, and VHS movies. Cassette mixtapes were standard for sharing music. Dating meant calling a dorm room landline directly. Fashion leaned on shoulder pads, scrunchies, polos, khaki shorts, and boat shoes. Bear Bryant retired in 1982 and died in January 1983,leading to coaching transitions under Ray Perkins and Bill Curry. Playlists featured Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bon Jovi, and George Strait.
The 90’s

The 1990s bridged analog life and early tech. Dial-up internet, desktop computers, and email arrived late in the decade, but CDs, video rentals, video games, and disposable cameras dominated the era. Gene Stallings led Alabama to the 1992 national title, and some “home” games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham. Country music led the decade with Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, while style shifted to denim overalls, baby tees, baggy jeans, and flannels.
The 2000’s

The 2000s brought the shift to digital. Landlines and CDs gave way to texting, digital cameras, iPods, and the 2007 iPhone launch. Facebook arrived in 2004 for college students, turning party photos into online photo albums. Nick Saban was hired in 2007 and won the 2009 national title. Low-rise jeans, UGG boots, cargo shorts, and Hollister shirts ruled fashion, with music from Usher, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Taylor Swift.
The 2010’s

By the 2010s, modern campus life took hold. Instagram, Snapchat, and group chats became the main tools for dating, events, and communication. Alabama won national championships in 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017. Standard attire became oversized Comfort Colors tees, Nike shorts, Chacos, Patagonia pullovers, and boat shoes. Popular songs included “Party Rock Anthem” and “Wagon Wheel,” with football game days remaining the focal point of student culture.
