It is only the end of February and there have already been so many great shows released in 2023. I can confidently say that I have never binged so many shows in such a short amount of time before. All the platforms such as Hulu, Netflix, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime really have been popping off. My favorite has been HBO Max lately, not even just with their TV series, but they also have such great movie options. I think the craziest movie I have seen on HBO this year has been the movie The Menu. If you need something wild and something to freak out your imagination go watch it you won’t regret it. Anyway back to the TV shows, my favorite TV series I have watched this year has been White Lotus. This TV show was actually released in July 11th, 2021, but it is now trending and everyone is watching it. It is only two seasons long and each season consists of eight to ten episodes and is around an hour in length. The show is about people on vacation who have money, and how money is impacting all of their relationships. I also like how each season doesn’t correlate to each other, I think I enjoyed the season a little better than the first. The first season takes place in Hawaii, but I just learned that HBO had three conditions for making the show at that location. First, it had to be at a single location, second, it had to be safe, and lastly, each episode had to be made for less than $3 million. Here are some other interesting facts I learned about this TV show. Since the TV show was filmed in Hawaii during the first season, nature was very challenging in shooting this project. Often the whales would be making a lot of noise and were a big distraction. The first season was shot within a COVID bubble because it was right in the middle of it all. So this created an incredibly close team at the time, they all had to stay and quarantine together on this island as they filmed. The last fact that blew my mind was that this TV producer wrote the entire show by himself in just two months. Typically, most TV shows have an entire team working together all collaborating to craft the best storyline of all time, but that is not how he handled it. If you got anything out of that it is that you need to start White Lotus tonight on HBO Max.
Moving on to my second favorite TV show of 2023 is The Last of Us. This series is also on HBO, and it originated from a PlayStation game that came out in 2013. This show was only one season long and had six episodes, which consisted of around an hour long. This show is all about how after a global pandemic destroys civilization a survivor takes this young who may be humanity’s last hope into his matters. It takes place 20 years after the civilization was destroyed. One night an outbreak of mutant fungus spreads throughout the United States which turns the human hosts into cannibalistic zombie-like monsters. It is a pretty graphic show, but it will definitely keep you railed in and coming back week after week for a new episode. Here are some fun facts that I have learned about this series. So first we already know that it was based on a video game which is so neat that it has come all this way, even though it’s almost 15 years later. Another fact is that the fungus in the show is actually a real fungus. In the show, it’s definitely an unrealistic concept, and no way our world gets to that point, but it is just crazy to think that fungus is actually real. Another investing fact about this show is that this whole idea steamed from Planet Earth. On one episode of Planet Earth, they talked about this fungus acting on an ant and is said to have inspired Neil Druckmann to create the video game. Once again the fungus Cordyceps is no actual threat to us, it just exists out there.
The next best TV show in 2023 is Poker Face. This series is on Peacock, I had to borrow one of my friend’s account for this one. This show consists of one of season of ten episodes. This month of this year the series was renewed for a second season. This show is about how a tech billionaire hosts a poker game between friends, but as the evening goes on it takes a big turn. Huge secrets are revealed, and an elaborate revenge plot unfolds and to top it all off thieves break in. Revolves around Charlie Cale who is an ex-poker played turned detective who can see straight through lies. Don’t forget to add that one to your list.
The next show I’m moving onto is You. I think many people have been watching for the latest season of this series to come out. The first season was released September 9, 2018 and now the latest season aired on Netflix February 9, 2023. The show You is about this young man who is intensely obsessive and goes to extremes measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is fascinated by. It is one of the most popular and creepy series. This show is very addicting, I remember starting this show for the first time and I finished the first season in 3 days. Years later I am so excited this season came out. The main actor is extremely charming which distracts the girls from seeing how crazy he is. Here are some interesting facts about this series, first I think it’s funny how Penn Badgley almost turned down playing the main actor, Joe. I am sure he was happy he didn’t turn it down because in the first season he made around 60k per episode. Another investing fact is that Netflix wasn’t originally supposed to be the place where you watch it. The show was first premiered on Lifetime then it was dropped after the first season. I am sure they are kicking themselves now after it was picked up by Netflix and took off. This TV show You is also based on books. I am an avid bookworm and I didn’t know that, but now I have something new to read. Last but not least TV series that a season came out this year is Outer Banks. This series was first released on April 15, 2020. The show has a total of four seasons, the latest season is what just came out on Netflix on February 23, 2023. This show is set in a community in a coastal beach town in North Carolina and follows a story between two groups of teenagers in search of lost treasure. This show hooked me so fast, and I have been waiting to see what comes next.
