Bama Bars – What’s the vibe?
Each bar here at UA includes a completely different atmosphere, drinks, crowd, and popularity. So let’s start with the strip; the strip is the main stretch of bars on University Blvd. This is one of the epicenters of bars and is packed Thursday- Saturdays. Are you looking for a chill spot to start your evening, a high-energy dance floor, or a place to grab late-night bites, the Strip has something for everyone. Depending on the day of the week or if it is a game day weekend, expect to cough up some money for cover.
Largest Bar At Bama
With there being many bars on the strip, it’s important to highlight those who deserve some honorable mentions. As expected, Rounders is first up as an Alabama staple. It is exclusively known as the “freshman bar” as you could likely get in with a McLovin id. The instagram Bama Chicks – a barstool affiliate used to hold a on going tradition of “Make Out Monday” which consisted of drunk freshman making out at rounders – they since canceled it for obvious reasons.
Typically on the weekends there will be a long line. Once inside, you will find 3 different rooms. The first is more of a waiting area to get into the Boom Boom Room and the roof top bar. Previously, the roof top was the place to be. Since recent reconstruction, the Boom Boom room completely transitioned. It’s new hottest location there including lasers, floor to ceiling led lights, and even smoke machines. Don’t forget to say Hi to Ms. Jackie while waiting in line. You can’t miss her with her megaphone in hand!
Honorable Mentions
With there being many bars on the strip, it’s important to highlight those who deserve some honorable mentions. The Standard is a recent edition to the strip, initially starting off as a late night drunken pizza spot. After their opening, they recently added a full bar to the back of their location. Featured in Dave Portnoy’s one bite pizza review it hit the maps with a solid 7.3 rating. Now, it’s typically with a packed bar and a line out the door for their greasy pizza.
Some great pregame spots on the strip are Glory Bound, 1225, and Rabbit Hole. GB has become a fairly popular pregame location. From pitchers, outdoor seating on the strip, a fully menu of food, and a prime location, they’ve got it all. Another big hit is 1225 on the strip. It’s best known for their vibrant atmosphere, live DJs, and unique drinks. It makes a great choice for a pregame or a place to dance the night away. And don’t forget to swing by on ladies night with free entry for the girls! Rabbit Hole is an Alice in Wonderland inspired bar with plenty outdoor seating, wonderland art work, and most notably a wall of spiked slushee’s!
Upperclassmen Bars
Although half of the bars clientele is underage college students, there’s a few that are not only strict with IDs. They are also often considered “off limits” to the underclassmen. If you’re a new member in a sorority, you have likely been briefed on this and sometimes can even expect a phone call to leave if you’re seen there. These bars include Bear Trap, Galettes, Houndstooth Sports Bar, and Inns Free.
Galette’s is a must-visit. Known for its famous Yellowhammers, this bar is a rite of passage for any UA student. They also are a great mid week bar with their wine Wednesday deals. The atmosphere is electric on game days! The whole place will be packed wall-to-wall with students decked out in Crimson gear.
Houndstooth is in fact a bar here and not just the pattern you see covering campus on game days. Speaking of, Houndstooth is the go-to spot for watching the Bama football games with friends. With tons of outdoor seating and TVs, its great location makes it a fan favorite.
For a more laid-back vibe, Innis is the spot to grab a beer and hang out with friends. This Irish pub-inspired bar is a favorite for its atmosphere, outdoor seating, and live music. It’s perfect for those nights when you want to enjoy a cold drink without the crazy crowds. An Irish car bomb is not just a crowd favorite here but a can’t miss experience.
Fraternity Parties
When it comes to throwing the biggest parties, no one does it quite like the fraternities at the Bama. With massive tailgates overflowing with music and themed date parties that rival any nightclub. Alabama’s fraternity scene sets the bar high. These parties are known for their over-the-top setups, top-tier DJs, and lights that turn a backyard into a full-scale festival. With just a few recents like Clooney, NLE Choppa, Dj Pauly D, Waka Flocka, and more. UaBarstool and BamaChicks hosts frat superlatives each year and Phi Psi took the win for best parties!
You may be wondering, can I get in? All band parties and darties are open invite if your a girl who goes to school here. Upon entry, the security guards may ask for an ACT card (UA student id) or an ID showing you’re 21. Once inside, it’s an absolute free for all of dancing, music, and free drinks! As for the men, brothers can walk in and out as they please. Often times for games, the fraternities from other schools will visit. They’re welcomed into their same frat at UA if given a band. That leads to one of the caveats, it’s a common misconception that if your a guy not in a fraternity that you will be allowed in if you simply bring girls. They are very strict that no guys without bands are allowed in.
Dartys, Date Parties, Band Parties
These are all fraternity parties put on by the houses here but they aren’t the same. During the fall, it is know as football season. This means Saturdays are spent tailgating at the quad or frat houses during the day. With most heading to the bars at night. Because of this, there are no dartys (day parties). But what’s the difference between date and band parties?
Date parties are hosted by both fraternities and sororities. These events are held at local bars and always have a theme. The house will rent out a bar for the members in that chapter to invite a date and party. The one benefit of a fraternity date party is that they have a pre set tab. This allows the brothers and their dates enjoy free drinks. Pledges are new members of fraternities. They are required to bring a girl to both date parties and have a game day date. If they don’t bring a date, some frats require them to walk around with a broom the whole time!
A band party is simply an event at night hosted by the frats. The will always have music, drinks, and are hosted year round. During the spring semester, there will usually be multiple houses throwing dartys in place of the football events. Similar to the others they too typically have a theme.
Game Days
There is no one that does game days better than bama. With die hard fans, game day rituals, tailgating and more, it’s impossible to compete. Game days are a sacred days in Tuscaloosa. From sunrise to sunset, the campus transforms into a sea of red and white. With die-hard fans packing the Quad and Bryant-Denny Stadium to cheer on the Tide. When Alabama plays home games, the insanity of game day reaches its peak. So what does an average game day look like here?
When night games occur, there is a small time of peace and tranquility before the festivities begin. On a regular game day you will begin to hear the fans, music, and the drinks flowing just after sunrise. An early morning start is very common as there’s not a moment to miss. The quad, centered in the middle of campus, will have tents set up for the tailgates before game day arrives. The tents on the quad are host by a variety of people. Most are for fraternities but others are rented out by other organizations or just big fans. Even though the area is many acres, it is packed with party goers. You are sure to see some shotgunning, the million dollar band, game day food, and more.
Walk Of Champions
Another highlight of game days is the “Walk of Champions”. It’s a beloved Alabama game day tradition that takes place before every home football game. Located in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Walk of Champions is where our team and coaches make their grand entrance. Fans gather hours before kickoff to cheer on the players. They walk down the pathway lined with granite panels showcasing the program’s national championships. The team will walk from the buses to the stadium through a tunnel led by the Million Dollar Band and a sea of cheering fans. It’s a high-energy moment filled with chants, cheers, and pure Alabama pride, offering fans a chance to see their favorite players up close and pump up the team before they take the field.
