Rocky’s Career Since Live. Love.

Share

ASAP Rocky just re-released the hit mixtape that put him on the map of the New York rap scene back in 2011 on streaming services, Live. Love. A$AP. The album featured songs loved by fans like Palace, Peso, and Purple Swag. Purple Swag would turn into a viral hit for Rocky with what some might say was a controversial music video when Live.Love.A$AP released artists like Drake and The Weeknd were also starting to create a buzz for themselves, so the music scene was becoming competitive, but Rocky made his own style in rap and fashion later on in his career.

Rocky’s first album Long.Live.A$AP was released in 2013 and shifted from the style of Live.Love.A$AP. This album features more commercial hits as it was his first release under a major label; it featured songs like F**kin’ Problems, Fashion Killa, and 1Train. F**kin’ Problems would go on the become the album’s biggest hit; you could not escape this song in 2013. The song features Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and 2 Chainz, the features on the song could be credited to the success of the song as Drake and Kendrick were just coming off their own very successful albums, Take Care and Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. My favorite song from this album happens to be 1Train the song features Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, and Action Bronson. The song comes in at 6 minutes, and all the artists just rap for the whole time; the switch on this song from others on the album is drastic as this song was clearly not created to be a hit like some of the other songs on the album and that is why it is my favorite as it sticks out on the album. Rocky would also start to venture into the fashion industry around the time of the album’s release, the song Fashion Killa is basically dedicated to luxury fashion brands.

Rocky’s second album At.Long.Last.A$AP was released in 2015 and it is my favorite album by Rocky. The album is consistent in sound from start to finish and features some of the best songs Rocky has produced like L$D, Jukebox Joints, Everyday, and Excuse Me. L$D since its release has been called one of Rocky’s best songs by many fans; the song is trying to make the listener experience what it would be like to take LSD and people agree that the song achieves that feeling, the song also has one of Rocky’s best music videos to date.

Rocky’s most recent album, TESTING, moves away from the naming style he had been consistent with for the last ten years; this style change is clear because the sound on the album Rocky uses is completely different from his past albums. When the album first released, some fans were not as excited about the release, but over time the album has been a grower. Rocky, since this album, has also been helping new up-and-coming artists grow like Playboi Carti, and he has been working with Tyler, The Creator.

Over the last 10 years, Rocky’s sound has come a long way from the dark beats of his first mixtape to the UK-inspired beats on TESTING, certain things work on the album and certain things don’t. That is how Rocky has grown as an artist since his first mixtape.
