Best Underrated Restaurants in Tuscaloosa

Being a college student in Tuscaloosa means you have probably already experienced many of the amazing restaurants that Tuscaloosa has to offer. However, if you find yourself always going to the same restaurants every time your parents are in town, consider some of these more underrated restaurants in the University community. Chuck’s, River, and DePalma’s are always great options, but try branching out this week and visit one of these amazing local restaurants!

City Cafe

If you want some good old-fashioned southern comfort food, venture to City Cafe in Northport. Known for their homestyle breakfast, the inexpensive, homey restaurant perfectly encapsulates what southern food should be. They also offer some amazing sides such as mac and cheese and fried okra. This is a perfect place to go with a group of friends on a weekend morning! Here’s the menu.

T-Town Cafe

Another amazing southern cooking cafe, T-Town cafe is located right in Parkview Plaza. They have a great meat and three style menu that will be sure not to disappoint if you’re craving a home-cooked meal.  Be sure you get the bread pudding; it’s the best in Tuscaloosa!

Cravings

Located in the heart of downtown Tuscaloosa, Cravings is the perfect breakfast, lunch, or snack spot. They have sandwiches, all bagels, and even lobster rolls. Not only is the service always great, they also have a small grocery store that offers beer and wine. This would be a great place to go with a group of friends, or even to pick up some items before hosting a brunch. Here’s the menu.

Nick’s Original Filet House or “Nick’s in the Sticks”

This Tuscaloosa favorite is extremely underrated in the UA community. They offer cheeseburgers, fried fish, and best of all…the best cheap filet you can find in Tuscaloosa. Not only is it bacon-wrapped, but it comes with a side salad and a baked potato, fries, or onion rings. They also offer their special cocktail, a “Nickodemus,” that is a Tuscaloosa favorite. The restaurant is very small and has an extremely homey atmosphere, so just be sure to get there early or you’ll be waiting in line for two hours!

Antojitos Izcalli

Price: $

This Mexican restaurant has incredible but modest dining. They do not serve any alcohol, but the great prices and food are reason enough to visit. Any of the tacos, quesadillas, or tostadas will have you questioning what you thought was good Mexican food.

Billy’s Sports Bar & Grill

Price: $

Located in Northport, this is somewhat of a hidden sports bar to Tuscaloosa college students. They’re known for their amazing chicken, burgers and fries. They offer live music on the weekends, and anyone who goes once is almost guaranteed to go back. The extensive beer and food menu will please anyone in a large group!

Sage Juice Bar & Speakeasy

Sage is the perfect place to get a healthy snack, lunch, or juice. If you haven’t tried it yet, this is your sign to go! Located right in Tuscaloosa, this place has a wide range of reasons to go. Whether you’re studying, post-exercising, just relaxing or getting drinks with friends, Sage is the perfect place. They have delicious bowls, wraps, and paninis that will leave you feeling healthy and satisfied. Here’s the menu.

Southern Ale House

Next time you’re looking for a slightly more upscale place to dine, check out Southern Ale House. Their entire menu is delicious, and they have something for everyone. Located in Northport, Southern Ale House is somewhat of an undiscovered gem among the University community. They also serve brunch on weekends! Here’s the menu.

Evangeline’s

Price: $$$

If you haven’t been to Evangeline’s…let’s just say you’re really missing out. This is the perfect upscale dining for date nights, special occasions, or parents weekends. They take reservations and are always sure to impress with their gorgeous decor and atmosphere. Not only is the service amazing, but anything on the menu is delicious.
