Catfish Heaven: Best Wings in Town?

Share

Ever since the last time at Catfish Heaven, I could not stop thinking about the flaky, golden crust on great catfish. Their drink selection also intrigued me, with all the different flavors of Kool-Aid, there is so much to try. But this time around, I had to test out these wings I had been hearing so much about. I had been told that the claim that Catfish Heaven had the best wings in town is not a crazy statement, in fact it had been backed up by multiple sources. So I decided to give the wings a try rather than get the catfish a second time.

Before heading to a concert in Birmingham on Friday, December 5th, I needed some fuel. I asked my girlfriend, Maven, if she would like to accompany me since she didn’t get to go last time. I wasn’t quite sure what flavor wings they had. But before we even got there I had either barbeque or a Thai/sweet chili on my mind. Or even better, both. Upon arrival we walk into Catfish Heaven and my eyes fall upon the flavor board. They have all the classics, so of course there was barbeque and sweet chili. I ordered a 10 piece wing and tried to get both barbeque and sweet chili, but I was unable to combine flavors so I asked the cashier what he recommended.  He told me to go with the sweet chili. I think it is because I did not get a big enough order of wings. Maven got three pieces of catfish, and I am glad she did so I could enjoy them again. To drink, instead of getting the Blue Lagoon Kool-Aid again, I got the Tornado. It was pretty good, kind of tasted like a sour grape Smartie. Maven just got a Diet Coke since she could drink from my Kool-Aid.

After waiting a little bit, our food was finally ready. They definitely gave me more than the 10 wings I ordered, which is not something to complain about. They were a little smaller than I would have liked. However, they were still pretty decent. Not too much breading was used to fry them and they were adequately sauced up. Now are they the best wings in town? I wouldn’t say that based on this experience, maybe they were out of the normal wings and had to substitute with the smaller ones. Maven couldn’t finish her catfish plate so I got to step in and eat some more of that as well. Still a great experience and fantastic food at Catfish Heaven.

The next time I go back, I may try out their wings again, but the catfish was definitely the star of the show this time around. I also know now to go mid-afternoon if I am eating there. The first time we were there, it was an hour before close and everyone was picking up to-go orders and coming in to place their order. The whole place was packed out shoulder to shoulder it seemed. This time around though, it was calm and there were just a couple other people around.
