Picture this: It’s game day at the University of Alabama. You head over to your fraternity/sorority tailgate. Upon arrival you are granted aux privileges. The only stipulation is that you must play something new. Looking around you can tell that the vibe isn’t hip hop but rather day-drinking music but don’t want to play country. You’re lost in the confusion and stress of aux privileges. What do you do?
Well, I have something for you! The rock band, The Doobie Brothers, released their new album, Liberté, on streaming platforms earlier this month. That’s right, The Doobie Brothers are still going strong. This album comes seven years after their last album Southbound came out in 2014. This is the band’s 15th studio album.
For those of you who don’t know who The Doobie Brothers are, they are a Hall of Fame rock band that started in the 70s from San Jose, California. While being active for five decades, the group found the majority of their success in the 1970s. The band has sold more than 50 million albums over the last 50 years. Their founding members consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Tom Johnston, guitarist and second vocalist Patrick Simmons, bassist Dave Shogren and drummer John Hartman. The current members include Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, John McFee.
You might have heard some of their most popular songs like “Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Runnin’’ and “What a Fool Believes”. Their first album (The Doobie Brothers) came out in 1971 and was an instant hit among Californians. Their songs are day-drinking classics. From family BBQs to tailgates, The Doobie Brothers provide the music one needs for any day-time events. Liberté, named after a club in the Santa Cruz Mountains called the Chateau Liberté, features 12 new songs which are 100 percent certified bangers. Two of my personal favorites being “The American Dream” and “Oh Mexico”. “The American Dream” gives out huge “Listen to the Music” type of vibes with how they both start out. The name pays homage to the band’s origins. Along with a new album, the band is currently on the road for their 50th anniversary. They will be playing in my hometown of Charlotte, NC on June 8th. If you’re a fan of soft rock or even yacht rock, I suggest you grab a cold brew, sit back and relax while listening to a future Hall of Fame album.
