A Look into Smaller UA Spring Sports for the 2023 Season

Ranked #19, Alabama’s Women’s Rowing team has been quite impressive this passed season.

We will be taking a look at some of the more smaller sports at Alabama with Men’s Golf, Women’s Rowing and Women’s Tennis. There is a lot of hope generated for these teams in the coming futures and even this season. Several are even competing for National Championships this season and should be more recognized. We’re not just a Football school.

Men’s Golf

With the SEC Championship tournament happening next week, Alabama is sitting rather comfortably as one of the top six teams in the SEC to compete for the championship. With Alabama not winning the SEC Championship since 2014, there have been lots of hope surrounding the program for this season as well as the near future. Brentley Romine from golfchannel.com states, “After finishing below .500 last season, Alabama enters the spring with a 23-win cushion in head-to-heads…Senior Canon Claycomb began his fall win-eighth, but a solo 67th at the Golf Club of Georgia was a tough one to swallow as it relates to his Haskins Award chances.” A lot to look forward for this program in the coming years nd nothing but positives entering the SEC Championship tournament as well as NCAA Regionals. We wish them the best of luck and hope they absolutely drive the fairway.

Women’s Rowing

Ranked #19, Alabama’s Women’s Rowing team has been quite impressive this passed season. With them crushing the Louisville Invitational back in mid March and beating both Tennessee and Oklahoma in almost perfect fashion on April 1st. Although having a bit of a rough weekend for the Big Ten invitational versus Tennessee and Ohio State with head coach Putyrae stating, “”We experienced a great weekend of high-level racing and we learned a lot from each race. You learn things on the race course that can’t be learned in practice, so each time you can compete against strong competitors, you have the opportunity to get better. The racing is only going to get tougher as we enter the final quarter of our season, so how we apply what we learned here this weekend will help us prepare for our best results at the [Big 12] conference championship [May 14].” (via rolltide.com) With the Lake Wheeler Invitational coming up next week and the Big 12 championship and the NCAA Rowing Championship coming soon in May, the rough weekend was more of a learning experience for Alabama. Head coach Putyrae appears motivated to lead this team to a championship and we wish them the best of luck in their efforts this season.

Women’s Tennis

Ranked #50 in the nation according to ITA, Alabama’s Women’s Tennis team has had a successful overall season, however they are suffering within their conference with a record of 5-6. Their most recent match versus Arkansas was a devastating one with the Tide losing 2-4 to the Razorbacks. However there is a lot of hope for this team in the near future with a lot of young as well as experienced talent on this team and we with them the best of luck in the near future.
